It is defined as the “Fear or prejudice against homosexual people”. A very small statement but has so much into it.

What is this?

The fear, anger, hate and other aggressive negative emotions form the basis of this discrimination that is completely baseless and due to misinformation. The fear is either, they will become one of them due to their interaction with the LGBTQ+ community or of how society will treat them. This brings us to its types.

Types

Despite being complex, the entire phobia can be classified into two groups. Institutionalised or State-based homophobia and Internalised homophobia. Institutionalised homophobia arises from cultural or religious outlooks and practices. While internalised, comes from the fear of how people will react and treat them upon discovering that either they are one or if they are a supporter.

Understanding

Then again, multiple types of research have shown and proved that sexuality is not a mindset that changes with time or influence but something inborn and genetic. Discriminating on the basis of sexuality, where no one has control over is a crime comparable to racism that is senseless and baseless. In the past, it happened due to lack of knowledge, superstitions and misinformation. Now it need not.

This is not

It is paramount to know that this is NOT a DISEASE nor a DISORDER that requires treatment. It is just human nature. NO one can change your sexuality and you will NOT be influenced to change just by talking to them. Most of all, you need NOT be afraid or be disgusted to be one or to support one. Take pride in standing on the right side. See-through the biases.

What can be done?

Homophobia comes mainly due to misinformation. Get to know about the LGBTQ+ community more and see that they too are Humans, just like any. EDUCATE yourself and bring AWARENESS to others. Homophobia is baseless and senseless. It is a CRIME.
